His Excellency

Émile Zola's His Excellency follows Eugène Rougon, a formidable political operator whose hunger for influence drives him through the turbulent machinery of the Second Empire. In chambers, salons, and imperial gatherings, Zola reveals politics as a theater of vanity, fear, gossip, and self-interest, where deputies drift through sittings, allies whisper strategies, and public ceremony masks private rivalry. Rougon's return to power is pursued by an energetic circle of supporters working through the press, finance, law, and society, while Clorinde moves through these intrigues with unsettling poise, using beauty, diplomacy, and hidden motives to shape the game for her own ends. Jealousy, rumor, and imperial coldness sharpen the drama, especially in scenes of aristocratic spectacle and predatory symbolism. Yet Rougon remains both the object of devotion and the source of frustration: half-indifferent, half-alert, he is manipulated by those who need him, then driven back toward his own schemes, restless and uneasy as political stagnation deepens and a mysterious summons sends him on an unexpected errand.
