Selma Lagerlöf est née dans un petit village de Suède en 1858. Après des études d'institutrice à Stockholm, elle consacre sa vie à la littérature. Les légendes et l'histoire des familles de sa province du Värmland qui ont bercé toute son enfance sont le terreau de son imaginaire lyrique. La saga de Gösta Berling, grande épopée romantique et fantastique, en est le plus fameux exemple. Selma Lagerlöf publiera par la suite des recueils de nouvelles et des romans, dont le très populaire Merveilleux voyage de Nils Holgersson en 1906-1907. Elle reçut le Prix Nobel en 1909 et fut élue à l'Académie de Suède en 1914. C'est dans le même village qui l'avait vu naître que Selma Lagerlöf s'est éteinte à l'âge de 82 ans.
